From the day Dubai Offshore Sailing Club opened its doors in 1974, to the sailing fraternity, it has sported some of the best sailing opportunities in The Gulf. Throughout its existence, this non-profit club, has been run with the noble intention of promoting sailing in Dubai and its environs.

1156408690image_filler2.jpg The facilities include a recently renovated club house with a licensed bar and restaurant, a lounge area to relax after a hard day sailing and the opportunity to watch the sun go down on our terrace while enjoying the al fresco dinning. The new addition of wireless internet within and around the main building means we can boast that DOSC is the first and only sailing club in the United Arab Emirates with this amenity. The private beach and Tentola bar offers a quite area for members to relax and soak up the sun while enjoying some light refreshments. The Tentola bar is regularly used for social functions and events.

Sailing, as you may be aware, is the main focus of this friendly and lively club, which happily boasts a large, multi-national membership from wide and varying backgrounds. There are many sailing opportunties to choose from and with DOSC there is a chance to participate in them all.

If you are a beginner and wish to learn the basics of sailing there is the RYA Training Centre, with 4 fully qualified instructors to advance you through all the levels or simply hone your current skills. If you prefer the cutting edge of competition then there are the regular dinghy and cruiser races held most weekends. Whether you enjoy being in the middle of the action or prefer getting involved in organizing the events, there are many prospects avaliable. If you crave a slower pace of life there are now numerous cruising destinations for the larger boats. If you prefer the thrills, spills and sensitive handling of smaller boats, our sailing department's fleet of varied dinghies can offer this along with the highest level of safety cover for those enjoying an afternoon jolly. For the younger sailors we offer a fully structured Cadet Club, which takes your child from beginner to racer while acquiring RYA qualifications along the way.

Dinghy Racing
The dinghy racing is run by a large group of volunteers with the support of the Sailing Department. Constant on the water safety cover in compliance with RYA regulations. During the year there are various club and open sponsored events to take part in, with a number of them counting towards the annual Commodores Cup. The racing is always run on a mixed fleet basis to encourage as many participants as possible. For overall results each boat has its own Portsmouth Yardstick number which allows fair and competitive rivalry.

If you don't own your own boat but you have completed RYA Level 2 or equivalent you may hire one of the club boats from our fleet.

If your passion is for the close combat of the big boats then the regular sponsored club and open cruiser events are for you. With sailings' growing popularity, Dubai and the Middle East are bursting onto the scene with new opportunities all the time.

The club hosts many races run by a network of volunteers and supported by the Sailing Department. Raced over the whole season the privately owned fleet battles it out to claim the Commodores Cup for Division 1 and Division 2 with the trophies being presented at the annual May Ball.

If you are not a boat owner or on the membership waiting list and would like to become part of a crew, you can place your information on the crew board. With the ever expanding fleet of large yachts and growing commitments, crew are always needed. There is no guarantee that you will get a ride however it is worth a try.

1156408690image_panel_17.jpg MEMBERSHIP
Our current membership sits at 440 Single and Family members being the limitation that DOSC can currently accommodate. Pressure of new applications remains unrelenting, with a current waiting list in excess of 60 applicants. Prioritisation for membership slots (as and when they become available) will be granted to those applicants that satisfy the committee that they intend to participate actively as owners or crew of sailcraft.

Many of our existing owners are on the continual lookout for crew to compete in local events such as the Commodores Cup and specifically the new Maktoum Trophy Series, so prospective members are therefore urged to get down to DOSC and make this known. We will always do what we can to put owners and crew together. Your active participation in the sailing calendar (even as a non member) will help to promote your application towards the top of the list.

Prospective members are urged to complete the necessary application form which includes the formalities of providing DOSC with your UAE visa and passport details. You will also have to find a Proposer and Seconder for your application. If you are new to Dubai, and don?t know an existing member you will be asked to come into DOSC for a brief meeting with the Membership Secretary, who in turn will help you through these formalities. With your application you are urged to give full details of your sailing experience / RYA qualifications where appropriate, as this will help us to prioritise your application. If you are currently sailing on one of the DOSC boats, a supporting letter from your Skipper / Owner will also help the process. The same applies if you are actively involved in RYA training with our Sailing Department.

Through the medium of our new Website, I will endeavor to keep members and prospective ones up to date with the current membership situation. If you have any specific enquiry regarding the status of an application you are asked to get in touch with the Club Administrator or Manager, or failing this, the Membership Secretary.

The Club has been an RYA Training Centre since 1998, training and coaching many people of varying nationalities. Being an RYA centre we comply with and studiously maintain their universal standards and teaching methods throughout our teaching programme.

With 4 full time RYA qualified instructors the department can offer training in a variety of disciplines. We work to the RYA National Sailing Scheme, RYA Youth Sailing Scheme and RYA National Powerboat Syllabus. All of which cover a variety of sailing and power boating qualifications; fromcomplete novices learning to sail through to the buzz of high performance sailing and becoming involved in race rescue teams. These courses are taught in a variety of boats from the club fleet.
